For a while, this debate would be no brainer. It looks like we are trying to answer a question here with a seamlessly obvious outcome: SHOES, SNEAKERS, TRAINERS are the most important part of your outfit… or are they?

To better understand this we need to dive into the history of the sneaker a bit. Sneakers as footwear go back a long way. In the late 18th century, people wore rubber soled shoes called plimsolls, but they were pretty crude, I mean for instance, there was no right foot or left foot, sounds uncomfortable right? Over the years, tailors would improve footwear technology and footwear transcended form merely a form of protection but rather something that also accentuated your style and appearance.

The sneaker industry experienced a monumental surge in 1984 with the signing of Michael Jordan to Nike's basketball division, igniting a craze that would elevate the realm of sports footwear forever. Even upon Jordan's retirement from the NBA, Air Jordan retained their status as top sellers, solidifying their place in sneaker history. Amidst fierce competition from giants like Nike, converse, and Adidas, the landscape of sneakers underwent a transformative evolution, characterized by more vibrant colourways and innovative designs. Sneakers ceased to be mere athletic gear, branching into various disciplines such as walking, skateboarding, and cross-training.

When it comes to fashion, especially streetwear details are key. Small details on modern sneakers often tell a story or narrative that draws attention and adds character to your look. In addition to the aesthetic aspect, sneakers must also be comfortable and functional. This is where certain sneakers get their demand. A sneaker is possibly the only part of the outfit that feels like it has its own personality. For example when we wear a nice shirt, people often say “hey I really like your shirt”. Most of the time the appeal is on the style or type of fit the shirt you are wearing is that get’s the compliment and gets noticed. When it comes to sneakers, people often associate what you have on feet with the narrative and personality that particular silhouette already has in society regardless of who is wearing it.

A part of the outfit that rivals the sneakers however is pants. Pants are often overlooked yet undeniably crucial. Bottoms serve as the cornerstone of any outfit, anchoring the fit and providing a canvas upon which the rest such as shirts and shoes can truly shine. Much like the background to a painting, they establish the foundation upon which the entire aesthetic is built.

Without a well-chosen and flattering pair of pants, even the hardest sneakers of an outfit may fail to reach their full potential, underscoring the vital role that is often-underappreciated that pants plays in fashion.
